O.k. heres a question

I've got a standard 360 for mt car. I wish to massage a bit of power out of the old smogger But don't have a ton of money for new heads. I'm planning on some beter pistions. a medium cam <still thinking about what kind> and playing with the heads a bit to get some power.

What year, type, mods can I do with a set of stock heads?

I'm all about budget racing

Well, .. you sound like the perfict canidate for the old "basics"

A good Valve pocket porting and professional multi angle
valve job will give you the best bang for your buck.
Properly done these mods can give you a large percentage of
the power available from a full port job.

In my shop a pocket port, multi angle valve job ( 5 angles ), clean
& assemble will run you about $500.

If you want to try the pocket porting your self, .. just clean up
& blend the rough casting & machine marks but try not to
remove too much material. Don't "hog it out", .. just blend
the rough stuff.

The area of the valve seat, the seat and above & below are
THE most important part of the air flow path. The valve seat forms
a variable venturi and it's efficiency is the key to making power.
The valve job needs to be done by a professional race shop and
should include at least four angles on the intake seat and two angles
plus a radius on the exhaust seat.

As for heads, .. the 68 - 70 340 heads came with a 2.02" intake valve,
casting #3418915 - and 2531894, .. the 1971-72 340; 1970-72 360 came with the 340 head with a 1.88" valve, casting #3418915

I'd make sure to use a 2.02" valve, .. and it'll need proper pocket porting.

O.k. so it sounds like the best thing to do is get a set of early 340 Heads, have them pocket ported and bolt them onto the 360.

Very good to know. I'll keep you updated.

This is the "least expensive" thing to do. If you have a budget then
Edelbrock heads, .. or an Indy aluminum head would be an option.
Make sure to use the 2.02" intake valve.

Good luck.

I head some machine work was required for that? Is that true, or is it a bolt on?

Nope no machine work. You do need some extra parts though. They oil threw the pushrods so you'll need hollow ones. Mopar Perf. sells them just for the conversion $40

AMC type lifters are needed. Chances are if your cam isnt stock you have them already. Most cam companies sell the same lifters for mopars and AMC if not figure $80

Magnum Head bolts. $15 from the dealer

Magnum Rockers so try to get them from were ever you get the heads. I think they are about $100 for a set new.

Intake bolts on differant. You can either get a magnum intake or redrill the heads to use an LA intake. theres an intake out that works with LA or Magnum heads too. Its $150

Valve covers you can use LA covers.

The Magnum heads will flow enough to support 400 horse with out any work.

I'll be stepping up the Cam so I'll just make sure I get the kit with the lifters. I have a set of hooker competition headers for the 360 now, so that should be fine. I have a Edlebrock Intake Manifold, I've been wanting a reason to get an AirGap and I always replace head bolts. Seems like my work is going to be cut out for me

and heres a little more info on Magnum heads.

Im getting ready to do this swap also.

When you swap cams you can stick with a single profile cam. You dont need dual patern with the Magnums. They have good exhaust flow compared to the LA heads.

that said I'll be running an XE274 from Comp Cams but mostly because I ordered it before I decided to go with the Magnum heads. Otherwise I would have go with a Comp Cams Magnum 280H

Thats a good price. They usually end up around $300-$350.

I got mine for $200 with a 318 attached to them.

O.k...if you would be so kind, My little Magnum is home and on her engine stand, I'm about to start to tear her down. But I have a head question... yet again

The reason I got this girl so cheap is she had a burn valve, at least this is what the former owner believed. it ran but skipped a bit. So I may have to replace one head, no big deal. got a price already for $250. But I haven't been able to find a carb intake for these heads yet. I asked the machine shop about having the heads drilled for the LA intake, and he look at me like I had 3 heards

He said I would be beter off taking the heads of the 360 I have now, and just using it's setup. ... is this guy full of poop? Who sells a carb intake for these heads? or should I use my old heads, and if so, what else do i need to bring over to the magnum block?

Looking inside I see the roller lifters, very kewl!

Now the 318 I got had a medium Cran Cam in it, I have to pull the motor apart to get the part number. can I use this cam in the 360 magnum? it'll save me $$$ and if I do that, what about the lifters?

i'm such a noob!

For an intake you have a few options. #1 is redrill the heads. theres a guy on Moparts.com that has a jig to do this.

#2 is a Magnum intake. Mopar Performance has 2 intakes. 1 single plane 1 dual plane. edelbrock just releases an Air gap for Magnums and there is an Air gap copy you can get off of Ebay cheap.

Stick with the Magnum heads. thats what makes those motor great. The Magnum heads out flow all of the older heads

You can use a flat tappet cam in the Magnum motor but you need to make some chamnges to the valve train. Im not sure what they are, and Im sure they will add up tp the cost of a new Hyd. Roller. Remeber you can reuse roller lifters with a new cam.

I'll post this up in case others ever need this info.

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/index.html

Chrysler Magnum 5.2L and 5.9L V8
RPM Air-Gap magnum (1500-6500 rpm)
Designed for 1992 & later 5.2L (318 c.i.d.) and 1993 & later 5.9L (360 c.i.d.) Chrysler Magnum V8s, the RPM Air-Gap manifold allows the use of a carburetor on these originally fuel-injected engines for use in early muscle cars and street rods. This dual-plane manifold design incorporates the same race-winning Air-Gap technology thats been used on our Victor Series competition intakes for years for outstanding performance in the 1500 to 6500 rpm range. The Air-Gap design features an open air space that separates the runners from the hot engine oil resulting in a cooler, denser charge for more power.

RPM Air-Gap Magnum (non-EGR) .....#7577
Carburetor Recommendations:

Performer #1407 (750 cfm) - Ref. A, I, K, L, N, O use our #1481 Throttle/Transmission Lever Kit

Performer #1412 (800 cfm) - Ref. A, I, K, L, N, O use our #1481 Throttle/Transmission Lever Kit

Performer #1413 (800 cfm) - Ref. A, I, K, L, N use our #1481 Throttle/Transmission Lever Kit

Thunder Series AVS #1812 (800 cfm) - Ref. A, I, K, L, N, O use our #1843 Throttle/Trans Lever Kit

Thunder Series AVS #1813 (800 cfm) - Ref. A, I, L, N use our #1843 Throttle/Transmission Lever Kit

Installation Notes: Recommended intake gasket: Mopar Performance #P4876102 (or equivalent) Manifold height: A-4.75", B-5.8" see manifold selection page. Port exit dimensions: 1.08" x 2.10".
