Trailer maintenance

How often do you guys do trailer maintenance?
I'm talking axel and wheel bearings.
My trailer is almost 1 year old. I bought it brand new.
I had someone tell me that since it sat out in the snow during
the past winter my bearings could be shot.
Is this true?
I planned on doing maintenance next spring.
Now I'm a little concerned. :?

I would think the bearings on the trailer would be similar to the bearings on any other vehicle. I've had my trailer close to 5 years, I've pulled the wheels once to have a look at the bearings and they were in perfect shape.
