Header Wrap
OK, understand this. If you're thinkin' of wrapping your headers, take an extra Prozac or (insert drug of choice here), douse yourself with baby powder, put a mask on and be prepared for a fight!!!! It really sucked. It took the better part of a day to complete. Also, had to go back and get more wrap cause the 100' just wasn't enough. Had to get an extra 50'. I did Hooker Super Comps with 2" primarys and 3.5" collectors. Having said all that, I'm glad I did it.

You did it with the headers ON the car, right?

Yes, on the car. I figured it would be even more difficult to do with the headers off the car; you'd have to have a way to stabilize them to wrap 'em tight.

Doesn't that promote rust under that stuff? I thought I heard that somewhere.
It should keep the under hood temps down a bunch though. |
Supposedly, it can reduce the underhood temperature by up to 70% by retaining the heat in the pipes, which helps reduce the chance of reversion (exhaust gases being sucked back in to the cylinder through the exhaust valve before it has fully closed). We all know that reduced underhood temperatures translate into cooler intake charges which can result in a few more ponies. 8) I also added a crankcase evacuation system, which increases piston ring seal, thereby reducing blow-by, which also can result in a few more of them ponies. Damn, I love ponies!

Which crankcase evac system did you install Shogun, Mr. Gasket? Did you weld the ends into your headers, or run hoses down sides?

Do you have mufflers on your car? Does the evac system work with mufflers? I heard (not a reputable source :roll: ) if you plum the crankcase evacuation system to the headers on a car with mufflers you will suck or blow the oil out of the car. Something to do with the backpressure or reversion with the mufflers :doubt: . They said you can get around this by running the evac lines to the exhaust after the mufflers. Anybody know if that is ture :? ? |
Reading in a Jegs catalog the Shogun evac system is made for headers with mufflers. Says comes with check valve usually located at the header.

I used the Moroso crankcase evac kit. Had to buy the heater hose separately. I welded the tubes with one way valves into the collectors after drilling a 7/8" hole with a "unibit". The unibit worked great cause the hole has to be made oblong so the tube sits in at a 45 deg angle.
I can't answer the muffler question with any certainty, but my guess is it may depend on the muffler design; some will provide more back pressure than others, whereas some are virtually back pressure free. |
That Shogun piece is nice, a bit pricey though.

Thats what I thought too JZ. The other one, Mr. Gasket doesn't bolt up it just pushes on like the ones I already have.
Dan, does the Moroso push-on or lock nut onto valve covers? |
Push-in gromet, but I made it fit very tight.

Ok Dan, my problem is it seems to want to push my breathers out and then leaks aroung the gromet. How did you make it fit so tight?

My valve covers were new cast aluminum and I had to drill out the blanks for the breathers, so I was careful not to open them up too big. A little 3M super yellow weatherstrip adhesive around the gromet and wallaaahhhh! Nice and tight, no leaks.

No. I have to find a tall pair I like. Rockers come up too high for the ones I have to be baffled.
