Shifting Savvy

An old drag racing friend of mine pointed this out to me. If your optimal shift point is say 5800 rpm, and you set your tach so that your shift light comes on at 5800 rpm, by the time you actually complete the gear shift, you're probably at 6000 rpm. Point being, if your peak power comes in at 5800, then you should probably set the light to begin your shift at 5600 rpm.

I've been doing that for years!

I shift at 5600, I have my shift light set for 5400.
