No Racing?

Haven't seen any post of anyone doing any racing. Whats up? Weather? Cars broken ? Taking time off?
I'm going to try to get to Island in Great Meadows either 9/6 or 9/12 for some T & T. More than likely 9/12 since 9/6 is a holiday weekend.
Dan , if your out there, whats the scoop on Island on holiday weekends? I know they are open , but are they crowded or empty?

I'm going to try and get to T&T on the 4th.
That is if I get the car back together.
I pulled the 440 out and am putting the 340 back in, but this time with an auto behind it.

After being run hard for 16 years and being in 4 different cars, it's tired.
It lays down at the top end of the track. I think I heard the lifters clattering after the last run I made. It only ran a best of 13.4 at 92mph with an 1/8th mile speed of mid 80's. Felt like it was slowing down.
It has gone 12.62 @ 102.
I have never had the chance to run this 340 all the way down the track.
Between the electrical problems and the parts breakage.
The engine pulls real strong but I didn't trust the 4spd, which had the syncros cut.
The 340 came with the car and has 13-1 compression mid 500 lift cam, 850 Holley.
First time out with the car I eased it out in 1st shifted to 2nd and all felt good so I put my foot into it , then pulled third and blew the u-joint apart.
So it's going back in so I can see how it really runs, while the 440 waits for money so I can rebuild it.
The time slip from the previous owner was 12.92. I found the timing was waaayyyy over advanced. the power valve had 2 gaskets under it so it was just pouring fuel out, the 4.88 rear gears were loose and the drivers side axle was twisted. Along with the poor ground on the msd box and crimp connector holding the wires together.

The 440 came out of a 68' Satilite possibly a GTX. It originally had a 4spd behind it. I spotted it at a local junk yard, recently parked there. The guys decided to do burnouts up and down the road in front of the place untill it blew up, or so they thought.
I got it home, quick looked it over and replaced the distributor cap that was split in half. Fired right up and sounded good. I pulled the whole drivetrain out of the car and some other stuff and sent it back to the junk yard. The front frame rails were bent twords each other, form hitting a tree or pole.
From there it got torn down, cleaned and reassembled. the only new parts were the gasket kit, the 509 cam and a high volume oil pump. Real low buck. i also installed my 67' closed chamber heads.
It went into my 71' Road runner for a while, then into an aspen which I never finished, then to a 72' charger which I raced untill I found the front frame rail decintigrating. Then it went into my 71' Dart which always seemed to run very horribly inconsistant. From there it went into the Demon.
Sorry for the rambling. I work nights and I had so much running to do today I haven't slept yet.

Broken U-joints....ouch! Are you gonna go with the 1350 series this time? They'll handle anything you throw at them.

Tony, I dont't really know what it's like on holiday weekends at Island, but my guess is that it will be sorta crowded, especially since Monday is the celebrated holiday. Sunday the 5th is T&T, gates open @ 11am. I'll probably on Staurday to race, since 2nd half points ends that day....my last chance at getting any, and Sunday, I'll probably have to do the family thing.

On saturday, my races got rained out. Good thing they did, As I was hooking up my truck to the trailer. The water pump decided to start leaking bad. So I changed the water pump on the truck saturday. Made it to the races on Sunday. I won the Boagie round with a .015 package. Made $65 . Then first round I broke out by .001 , I ran a 10.259et on a 10.26 dial. This coming weekend is TEST & TUNE on saturday, I think it is $40 , I usually get 8 to 10 runs in on saturday . Sunday is a points race. So far I am tied for 10th place. Labor Day weekend is 4 days. Friday night is usually street racing, but not this weekend. Friday will be like a Test & Tune. Saturday & Sunday are points racing. Monday is Double Points , if you were their for saturday & sunday. So I know where I will be Labor Day Weekend!!

Tony, negative on the 12th. I work alternating weekends in a hospital and that's my weekend to work. I do, however, have 1 sick day left to take..... it's a good possibility I can make it.

I'll definitely be there on the 4th. Heavy is $60 and trophy is like $20. You can run in one or the other, or both.

Noon. Plenty of time for tech, and time trials don't begin 'til about 2:30.

Looks like I might make it to the Valley.
I have to fix one tranny line and set the exhaust system up.
Then set the timing, top off the tranny. and check for leaks.
But it does run.

To get to Lebanon Valley from Bergen County you would have to take 17 to the the Thruway & I would guess it is about 2 hours or so from Mahwah.

I'm all loaded up and ready to go Test and Tune.
Going to be a tough ride up there after working all night.
I just hope I don't break anything, I have a habit of doing that.
It will be fun to see how well this little 340 runs.
By the way it felt with the 4spd behind it, and only getting to get to 2nd gear before the yoke and u-joint gave up, It should be in the 11's.
This engine is a little better built than my basically stock 440 was, and that ran 12.62 @ 102 with 4.10 posi rear and 26" tires.
We're running a 4.10 spool and 28" tires now. The 340 seems to rev up real fast compared to the 440 also.
Wish me luck
Norm
