Yesterdays T and T

Yesterdays T and T
Well I got the car to the track yesterday. Slightly disappointed.
I got 2 runs in, could have had 3 but I screwed up. I was to tired after working all night.
Here's the second run times
60ft. 1.943
330ft. 5.526
1/8 8.515
mph 81.67
1000ft 11.132
1/4 13.371
mph 100.14
Leaving the line at 2000 rpm
I need some help tuning this thing, I beleive it should run low 12's high 11's without a problem.
There is a problem that came up yesterday with the carb. Seems it wants to load up at idle sometimes, and others it will idle at 2000rpm. I think the floats need to be rest, I'll check that first.
Here's what I know about the engine, or was told by the previous owner.
340
13-1 compression, I did a compression test and pressures were all around 215-220psi.
mid 500 lift solid cam, with roller rockers. He never came up with the cam card. I hvae to get out the dial indicator and check this.
Ported x heads. o-ringed.
850 holley.
I put in a 3500 stall converter, but I think that's a little low and I am going to try and get the 4500 from my friend.
manual reverse valve body.
4.10 spool in the back, running 325x50 15 BFG dot comp's
Timing I set at 36deg. It has the Mopar race dist.
The 60' time is higher than I thought it would be, but it didn't feel like it was spinning.
Any sugestions would be appreciated. If you need more specs on the car, just ask.
Thanks.
Norm

Norm, do you get a stumble off the line? Do you have the correct power valve? Take a vacuum reading at idle, divide that in half and add .5
Have you read the plugs after a run or played aroung with the jetting?
Does your carb have mechanical or vacuum secondaries? Is the intake single or dual plane?

It has mechanical secondaries, and a sigle plane manifold.
I didn't get a chance to read the plugs either.
I think I am going to go with the 4500 convertor to get the revs up, off the line.

I had time to fiddle with the car for a few min today.
Here's what I did.
Pulled the 180f thermostat and cleaned up everything and am going to put in a new 160. It was running around 195-200 and was afraid it was going to go higher.
Pulled the distributor cap. OOPS!
I forgot to put the new cap and rotor on. The rotor that was on there was LOOSE. No way, no how should I have left that on there. It moves on the shaft way to much. could be why the idle was jumping around.
The new cap and rotor are on.
I am going to pull the carb and go through that and write down all the numbers, pv, jet sizes etc.

Pulled the carb apart today. The primary jets are 83, with a 5.5 pv
The secondaries have 84's with a 3.5 pv.
Don't know what this means yet, but I have to find my Holley book and see if I can figure out where to start from.

The jets are the stock size (72, I think), as is the power valve. I never really messed with it much, just bolted it on and went racing. I did put the quick-change secondary spring kit on it, and played around a bit with the springs. I've got the purple spring in there now.
I had a 750 DP (4777, I think) on my 318, but I cracked the base plate on it and chucked it.
The 3310 carb was brand-new when I got it - the guy who sold me the motor gave me the carb for $100. I couldn't pass it up.
I'd really like another mechanical secondary carb, though. I'm just too cheap to pay for one.

Well I changed my mind again. I kept with the 850 and put in new jets. 78 all around. It also has 5.5 pv's on both sides just incase the 3.5 was closing on the top end.
So, What to do now?
I guess I fill it up with anti-freeze, and put it away for the winter ,
and try again in the spring.

Atco has a big $$$ footbrake race coming up in a few weeks. I'll be there...

A bunch of parts showed up on my porch today, and I'm waiting on some more that'll be here next week. I'd like to get to a track on the 16th (not likely) or the 23rd. Then to Atco on the 5th, 6th & 7th. THEN I'll wrap it up for the season. Hopefully with a pair of big checks in my pocket!

Well, today I turned the fuel pump on and set the floats. Seems to still want to wander at idle a slight amount. Could be the springs in the distributor, I'll have to get the timing light out and check.
When I shut the engine off the front side of the carb had vapor coming out, Is this normal for the holley? I seem to remember all the ones I had doing this.
Anybody use those plastic sight glasses? Pros/cons?
Mine apparently were tightened to much and the centers were white.
Went to take one out and it snapped in half. Oh well. I put a stock one back in.

If you do it my way drain and remove the bowl.
Might as well clean everthing in there while its off.
Turn it upside down and ajust until the bottom of the float
is just about even with the now top of the site hole. Lock
it down and re-check.
