Pics of Progress

As promised here are the pictures from the front suspension. This weekend I have too much house stuff to do so the plan is for next weekend to finish making the brakeline templates and start the wiring.

new struts 80/20's, new lower control arm with improved ball joints LCA's are double nutted and left a little loose to help the front come up (no bind). Upgraded to the later model 11" front disks and the fore mentioned pain this the a$$ Eibach drag springs.

Yes, the sad part is I started this rebuild and collecting parts over 9 years ago. At that time the coil over stuff was rare and expensive. Now everyone makes tubular K-members with coil over setups. I figured I've waited long enough plus if I keep replacing parts that haven't been used yet with newer better parts I'd never get it done and I'd go bankrupt.

This setup should work good enough for now, plus I want to keep the car on the street so I can use it more. Later on when I go to the 521cid BBF on the back burner I might re-visit the front to get some weight off and make the suspention more adjustable.

Last time at the track (1997) the car was a consistent 13.50 car. Since it's going on 10 years, I would be happy with a 13.50 again. I hope once I get all the bugs out and a good tune up in it that it will give me a low, low 12 second run. I don't think there is an 11 in it but I sure wouldn't mind. [-o< The hard part will be working out the bugs, normally I don't like making more then one change at a time, well this time I changed everything.
Manual --> Automatic
Stock suspension --> drag setup
Flexible flyer --> full cage
New massaged stock heads
Distributor re-curved
New fuel system
New water pump and pulley arrangement.
3:27 --> 3:73
DOT tire --> full slick
New cooling and fan setup
not to mention the diet plan (the car not me )

and much more that I can’t remember anymore.

I’m sure between the Wrangler and New Beetle hell that I’ve been living in, what ever it runs will seem like a rocket

what motor are you running? a 302? how does the weight compare? you said that you cut some weight, but roll cages are good for whatm, 300lbs? also, 13.50 is pretty good for a stock(?) hatch...

I was considering full slicks, but someone who i know, who has a great deal of track knowledge (he has had several 10 and 11 second cars, and currently has an 11 second SS) told me that with the power that i am putting out, running mid 12s with the old setup (now with a 4.56 spool and 4000 stall) that a full slick might have too much give in the sidewall, and would actually hurt me a bit...therefore, the boss ordered another set of QTPs..

The current setup is a 302 .030 over. I milled the heads and grinded on them myself (not sure if the helped or hurt it yet)

It's a little out dated but more info can be found here:
http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_jzaun.html

As far as weight reduction the car scaled at 3350 with me in it and a 1/2 tank of gas at Maple Grove

Since then I removed the heat, power steering and bracketry, power brake boaster, front sway bar, rear seat, seat belts sound deadener, door crash bars, gas tank and a big old rat’s nest of wiring.

The cage only added 140lbs and with the improved stability and repeatability it should be well worth it.

I'm guessing I'll be around 3000 with me in it when I'm done. I want to enjoy it for a while before I take it apart to do the body work. Then I'll add a glass hood and hatch.

wow..nice and light...with the metal trunk lid, i tipped the scales at 3692...with only enough fuel to make it from the garage stall, down the track, and back...
