Cylinder head work
Who do you guy’s recommend on LI for head work. I have a set of iron heads that I want milled and bigger valves put in.
I figured I go with Sharkey’s Competition Porting.
Anybody hear anything about Diamond Cylinder heads? That’s Dan Keloes (SP?) with the Top Priority Mach 1 Mustang.

I knew where Dan lived back in 97, I drove by last Saturday and he doesn't live there anymore, I can't find a number for him and I don't know where his shop is, somewhere in Shirley.

I'll offer some basic back ground, .. I've been a cylinder head porter and fluid dynamics engineer for over 24 years. I've held various jobs including a stint working for Sonny's Auto building 700" pro stock & top sportsman heads. Did some Cup work in the 80's, . .did contract work for McCandless & Mopar, . . last few years I've been doing a bunch of 4 cylinder work for road race formula cars. I mostly serve pro engine builders.
Right now turn around time is good, .. the road race season just closed and the drag racers are still going. In a few months I'll be back to the normal backlog of work when everybody starts their winter rebuilds. Most of the time mild porting & machine work we can turn around in a few weeks, .. sometimes less. Major porting and development work takes longer.
I use two flow benches, .. a small Superflow for the 4 cylinder work and a custom made bench for high flow work like pro stock. The high flow bench lets me test at very high vacum rates like 45 -60" of water.
I use a Serdi seat machine with several custom cutter sets I designed using flow data. Race valve jobs start at $150 for 4 cylinder and go up to $225 for V8, .. .. no extra charge for cutting for oversize valves.
Seats are vacume checked and hand lapped in.
Basic bowl work on a V8 is $400 not including valve job. My bowl work is not just a simple clean up under the seat. I reshape the bowl and also work the short turn to tune the flow curves, .. and even my bowl work is tuned on the flow bench, .. no cutting corners!
Bracket race porting starts at $800 per pair on aluminum heads and is a full porting designed for your application.
High end development projects like comp elminator, pro stock, super stock etc need to be quoted.
I handle the normal line of parts, .. Dart, Edelbrock, Del-West, SI, Ferrera, and have several CnC port designs available.
Now, .. discounts to board admins, .. . well, .. let's see, .. you seem like a nice guy, .. might put my sticker on your car, .. .. only down side is you have IRON heads, ,, ( Yuck, .. hate working iron ) but yes I'll give you engine builder / jobber price to be kept confidential.

I wouldn't pay to ship these junkers, maybe when I have something better that needs some work, I do have a 514 BBF project on the back burner.

Got the heads back yesterday, no cracks =D> So I went to work on them. Got about 75% of one head done, removed all the metal now I just want to blend everything out.
Everything taste like metal today and between the die grinder and the compresser kicking on and off my head is ringing. I think I'll give it a rest today and start fresh next week again.
Once I'm done back to G&R for some bigger valves and mill them .030

anyhow, .. porting your own heads be VERY carefull, .. if you can taste the iron that means you are injesting into your body, .. VERY BAD!!!!!!
The main content of cast iron is lead!!
OK, .. so, take your shop vac, . . make a little "cup" I found a pipe end cap at the harware store, .. put a little hose on it to adapt to the shop vac, .. hit Radio shack for a low volt light and mount that into the "cup.
Use a peice of coat hanger or welding rod to make a little clip.
This clips onto the port so when you are grinding the bowls, it's clipped to the gasket side, .. has a light to see what you're doing, and the shop vac sucks all the chips out and keeps the dust outa your lungs.
Oh, .. where gloves, .. lead gets absorbed through your skin too.
And last but not least, .. a special dust filter is available for most shop vacs, . USE IT!!!
The life you save might be your own, .. take it from someone who's been porting the better part of 25 years.
